After a hiatus of several decades, Beverly Hills Cop The series is returning, with Eddie Murphy once again starring in the comedy lead role. WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!
Beverly Hills Cop 4 has technically been in development since the mid-1990s, or in other words, that period was “development hell.” On the plus side, it at least avoided a director crisis. Brett Ratner.
Axel F The story begins with the great detective returning to Beverly Hills because his daughter Jane is in danger. Jane is a lawyer defending a man accused of killing a police officer. In a startlingly realistic production, the villain is a member of the police.
Kevin Bacon clearly had fun playing the bad guy, BHPD Inspector Grant, who (the character, not the popular actor) turns out to be in league with the cartel.
Speaking of fun actors, Joseph Gordon-Levitt pops up as Detective Bobby Abbott, Jane’s ex-boyfriend, which creates obvious tension between Jane and her father.
Judge Reinhold (fun fact: that’s just a name, not a judge) reprises his role as Axel’s fellow private investigator, Billy, and while it’s a small role, it may have been odd to film without him.
Naturally, there’s plenty of action too: helicopters, gunfights and plenty of laughs.
Explaining the ending of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F”
So what happened to Billy? After getting Jane to investigate Captain Grant and bringing Axel to town, Billy disappeared. The cartel caught him snooping and kidnapped him. Eventually, Axel and Bobby got him out of the warehouse.
But the big bad isn’t in the warehouse, he’s in the mansion, he’s holding Jane prisoner (classic villain tactics) and he’s planning to kill her to cover up his crimes (also classic villain tactics).
The final shootout sees our heroes kill cartel members and (more) corrupt police.
Grant exercised his privilege as the primary opponent. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.The protagonist.
Meanwhile, it was Bobby who killed Grant, which may feel like a passing of the baton, as 30 years have passed in real time and on film, and the movie makes that very clear.
Plus, Jane is able to prove her client, who was accused of killing a police officer, is innocent. Now she has proof of what Grant was up to and that his henchman framed Sam (Jane’s client). Great!
The fourth movie brings new nuance to the series
Axel Foley takes on new depth, and yes, action-comedy can do that too.
Jane holds him responsible for allowing his obsession with work to damage his relationship with his family and for not making as much effort as he could to maintain communication with her.
Although the film has plenty of opportunities for laughs, it ends with a tearful scene, when Axel admits his mistake, and although Axel and Jane seem to reconcile at the end, it’s a touching scene.
